Born in Marion, Illinois, Elder Carlton C. Potts learned about Jesus Christ in his Muncie, Indiana, boyhood UPC church, Apostolic Parkview, where he was baptized in the name of Jesus by Pastor (now Bishop) Richard Martin.
Here he was also introduced to fellowshipping with other Apostolic churches, both Black and White congregations; as a 10 year old, Elder Potts played the trumpet with the Parkview children’s choir, which performed in Indianapolis and other west-central Indiana churches. Pastor Floyd “Bud” Reading, who started churches in Alexander, Elwood and Greenfield, Indiana, was an important mentor.
His mother, the late Judy McAtee Potts, born in Mt. Vernon, Ill., was the youngest student to ever graduate from Apostolic Bible College, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She and her mother, Hazel Duncan Hutchison, passed the Oneness Pentecostal torch to Elder Potts, who received the Holy Ghost in 1978, at Brother Van Hoose’s Evansville church, while his grandmother looked on.
